The Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, has once again threatened to embark on an indefinite strike if the Federal Government fails to meet outstanding demands related to unpaid allowances and withheld academic entitlements, and the union’s statement following its National Executive Council meeting in Abuja expressed deep frustration with perceived government inaction.

ASUU alleges that lecturers across federal universities are yet to receive agreed academic allowances, research grants, and promotion arrears that were promised under previous memoranda of understanding, and the union has warned that unless progress is made within a specified window the union will have no choice but to withdraw services.

The announcement has reignited anxieties among students and parents who still remember the disruption caused by past strikes, and the union says its demands are about protecting academic standards, funding research, and ensuring fair treatment for staff who teach and supervise undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. ASUU’s public posture combines pressure tactics with calls for genuine negotiations, and the union says it remains open to dialogue but insists that promises without action will not prevent industrial action.
